Laura Liu – Founder & Director, Maple & Jade Music Studio

Laura Liu is an accomplished music educator, performer, and educational leader with more than 30 years in China and Canada. She is recognized as a Certified Advanced Piano Teacher by The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) and holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, building on her earlier studies in piano and vocal performance, and music education.

Laura began her teaching career in China, where she served as a certified music teacher, public school music mentor, senior instructor, adjudicator, examiner, and independent piano teacher for over twenty years. Since moving to Canada, she has continued her work as a contracted instructor in the Preparatory Studies Division of the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music, while also guiding students of all ages through the RCM Certificate Program, music festivals, recitals, collaborative projects, and community performances. Her teaching combines artistic excellence with a warm, student-centred approach that encourages curiosity, creativity, confidence, and lifelong learning.

As the Founder and Director of Maple & Jade Music Studio, Laura has created a welcoming learning community where music is embraced as a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and human development. Rooted in the belief that every student learns differently, the studio integrates individualized instruction with creative exploration, collaborative learning, and community engagement. Through meaningful learning platforms, professional resources, and authentic musical experiences, Laura empowers students to develop not only as musicians, but also as creative thinkers, lifelong learners, and compassionate individuals who contribute positively to their communities.

Laura is actively involved in the Canadian and international music teaching community. She serves as Past President of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association (MRMTA), First Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations (CFMTA), and Co-Chair of CFMTA’s Professional Development Committee. She is also an active member of ORMTA, BCRMTA, ISME, MTNA, MMTA, WSMTA, and CAPMT. Through these professional connections, Laura collaborates with colleagues across Canada and the United States, bringing current educational perspectives, innovative ideas, and professional resources into her studio and learning community.

Beyond teaching, Laura is committed to building bridges between music education and community life. She serves as a music festival adjudicator and is also a Steinway Teacher Partner. Through professional learning opportunities and educational programs connected to The Frances Clark Center, Laura continues to bring innovative teaching ideas, professional resources, and meaningful learning opportunities into her studio community. Guided by her belief that music is a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and human connection, Laura strives to cultivate not only artistic excellence but also curiosity, empathy, self-discipline, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.
